NAGPUR: A woman in her seventies was allegedly raped by a miscreant half her age at Martin Nagar in Jaripatka on Saturday evening. The victim Josy (name changed) tried to put up a resistance, but her feeble one-handed fight failed to throw off the ruffian. Her right hand has been affected by paralysis since the last three years.
Josy is very religious, and visits the church at Martin Nagar twice a day with her daughter-in-law or other relatives.
One of Josy's sons is posted as an operator in the paramilitary forces while the other is employed at Chandrapur.
"This unidentified person came to me and said one of my friends is waiting for me outside, while I was heading towards the church," said Josy, "I was surprised, but decided to follow him to see who was it."
There was no one waiting outside the church, so Josy hesitated and asked the stranger about her friend who was supposed to be there. The stranger then invited her over to his place for snacks, and told her that the friend was also waiting at his place.
"Generally, I do not eat before my prayers. But I had already come so far with him, so I decided to see who was waiting for me," said Josy. She was then taken to the house where the miscreant forced himself upon her, leaving her bleeding with bruises on her body.
The accused was later identified as Raju Aarif Swamy. Police said that Swamy's family has already deserted her. A daily wage earner, Swamy lives alone at his residence after his wife deserted him a decade back. Josy was rescued by Swamy's sister, who had apparently come to meet her brother.
Swamy's sister thrashed her brother even as she took Josy, who was in poor shape, into her care and informed Josy's family.
Josy's daughter-in-law took her to Jaripatka police station before she was rushed to IGGMCH for medical assistance. Josy is recuperating from physical shock and trauma at the hospital.
Police said that the victim had lost a lot of blood in the incident and so she was immediately sent to the hospital. Police inspector SR Kore of Jaripatka police station said that the accused Swamy was immediately arrested.
